We are pleased to announce that we are now able to offer groups who wish to book two consecutive days - but not stay aboard overnight - the opportunity to travel further afield and enjoy some more of the waterways of South Yorkshire.
On day 1 we will leave our normal base in Thorne, and travel towards Stainforth and Bramwith - you will still be able to order fish and chips on the way - whilst we continue through Bramwith Lock and into the New Junction Canal.
Crossing the Don Aqueduct we continue along the canal, passing though several swing and lift bridges - and the giant Sykehouse Lock - to our destination at Sykehouse Bridge.
Here our journey ends about 4pm, when your transport will be waiting for you. The crew will stay aboard overnight.
On Day 2, with your second party on board we will reverse the day 1 journey, but we may be too late for a fish and chip delivery - so a packed lunch is recommended.
Arrival back in Thorne will be around 4pm, where again your transport will be waiting. This voyage was trialled in 2008 and was thoroughly enjoyed by the group who participated.
A few questions answered:-
Q. How
will the transport know where to collect us from?
A. Sykehouse Bridge is easily located and drivers will be
supplied with detailed instructions on how to get there.
Q.
What happens if we are delayed on the journey and late for the rendezvous at
Sykehouse Bridge?
A. No problem - there are no
fewer than 5 road crossing points on this stretch of waterway, and provided we
have mobile phone contact with the driver we can advise him or her
accordingly.
Q. Will the driver be able to
travel with us?
A. Unfortunately not - unless
they want a long walk back to Thorne!
Q. Where
will we meet the boat on Day 2 if we don't arrive at Sykehouse Bridge on Day
1?
A. The crew will continue to Sykehouse
after you depart, so your starting point on Day 2 will be Sykehouse Bridge.
Q. What will happen if we are delayed on Day
2?
A. Again we will have the driver's contact
number and they will be able to meet us at either Bramwith Bridge or
Stainforth.
Q. What is the New Junction canal
like?
A. Although it's very straight for its
entire 6 mile length, there is plenty to do - 6 bridges and a lock! Birdlife is
usually abundant and on a clear day there are good views over the surrounding
countryside.
Q. Why is this being introduced?
A. Many groups who travel with us on a regular
basis ask if there is another route we can take. Unfortunately there is no
circular route, so this is the best option we can offer.
Q.
Will there be any additional cost?
A. No -
just the normal 2 day hire fee.
Q. Will our
group enjoy it?
A. Yes - we very much hope so.
Q. What if I have any more questions?
A. Contact Phil, our Project Co-ordinator, on
0114 253 6725 or 07722 678168 and he will be pleased to discuss the
arrangements.
